“Cultivating positive brains makes us more motivated, efficient, resilient, creative, and productive, which drives performance upward.”
What is the weird thing about this — that we would actually choose happiness and joy, that it is a choice; OR that happiness and joy are states that we would strive for, like success?
Choosing to be happy and joyful is more than a playful attitude. It shapes the way we think about our day-to-day life and the possibilities available. It cultivates a perspective where opportunities open up before us and we have the spirit and the motivation to go after them.
Growing up with a very positive mother and father, I learned to look for the bright side of things, to see the good. Later in life that was poo-pooed as being Pollyannaish, idealistic and unrealistic. I needed to be more pragmatic, to look at what is real. How fun when getting back to normal is returning to the positive!
I am so thoroughly enjoying reading The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. As an academic, it is fun to read about the research and see how it really applies to life, to my life/our lives. Personally, it is reassuring to focus on the positive, on joy and happiness, as a way to live and think!
It is fun to read about the science of happiness, positive psychology actually. Yes, fun and affirming that scientists are researching happiness and finding that happiness is actually the precursor to success, not the other way around. The positive brain sets the stage for all kinds of good things that lead to success personally, professionally, in relationships, in reaching our goals, in leadership situations . . . everywhere!
Very simply, we can choose happiness and joy. There is an advantage to doing so — success in all areas of our lives. Plus, happiness and joy spreads from person to person, rather like a totally marvelous positive virus.
